Horotiu Pā, a huge Māori settlement, once occupied the whole Cambridge central business district. The European township was established in 1864, following the conflicts in the Waikato region during the New Zealand Land Wars. Initially ‘Camp Cambridge’, a soldier settlement, Cambridge became a busy market town and a centre of activity for the Native Land Court. Journey with us through the town, to Lake Te Koo Utu, historic European buildings, the Waikato River, and the site of the Anchor dairy factory.

Tērā te wā i kapi te pokapū o Kēmureti i tētehi pā nui nō te Māori, ko Horotiu te ingoa. I whakatūria te tāone o Kēmureti i te tau 1864 i muri mai i ngā riri i te rohe o Waikato i te wā o ngā Pakanga Whenua o Aotearoa. I te tīmatanga, he kāinga nō te hōia a 'Camp Cambridge'. I muri mai ka huri a Kēmureti hei tāone tauhokohoko, hei pūtahitanga hoki mō ngā mahi a te Kōti Whenua Māori. Hoake tātou ki te tirotiro i te tāone, i te roto o Te Koo Utu, i ngā whare tawhito Pākehā, i te awa o Waikato me te wāhi e tū nei te wheketere mahi miraka o Anchor.

St Andrew’s Anglican Church

Te Wāhi Whakamānu Waka

This Anglican church is one of eight historic churches in Cambridge. It was opened in 1881 and has many striking exterior and interior features.

The first Anglican church was built in 1873 and still stands on this site. As the community grew, a larger church was required.

The 1881 church was built in Gothic Revival style, from kauri. Its organ dates from the 1890s. Over the years, the community has added many beautiful memorial features – including stained glass windows for the South African War and World War One, and illustrated hatchments for the New Zealand Land Wars.

One of the World War One memorial windows installed in 1923 represents the liberation of Le Quesnoy, France (the New Zealand troops’ final engagement). Today Cambridge and Le Quesnoy are sister cities.

E whakamānutia tonutia ana ngā waka i konei i tēnei rā hei haere ki ngā wāpu karekau he pāwai.
