If you’re driving from Auckland, the trip will take approximately two hours. Follow SH1 south, and from Hamilton you can head towards Cambridge and Rotorua on SH1, or towards Te Awamutu and Waitomo on SH3. 

From Waipā, the Bay of Plenty region is only 90 minutes’ drive away towards the east, and Taupō is a similar driving distance to the south.

Several cycling trails wind their way through Waipā. These include Te Awa walk and cycleway: an excellent way of getting to the Karāpiro zone from Hamilton or Cambridge. You can hire bikes from the Cambridge iSite.

Our main centres, Te Awamutu and Cambridge, are located about 25 minutes’ drive apart. On-street parking is free in the towns of Waipā but keep an eye on time limits. When you’re travelling between local spots, it’ll be a lot of driving on rural roads, and some areas may be narrow or winding. Keep left, and have an eye on your speed. During summer months you may encounter harvesting machinery driving through the country, so be patient while waiting for an opportunity to overtake slow traffic.
